Whitney Houston Movie Cast

Based on the life and career of American singer and actress Whitney Houston, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a 2022 biographical musical drama film directed by Kasi Lemmons from a script by Anthony McCarten. In addition to Stanley Tucci, Ashton Sanders, Tamara Tunie, Nafessa Williams, and Clarke Peters in supporting parts, Naomi Ackie plays Houston in the movie.

Early in 2020, an official biopic about Houston's life was announced. Ackie was cast in the lead part that December, with the remaining actors joining later in the year. Filming for the project, which had a $45 million budget, took place in Massachusetts and New Jersey between August and December of 2021.

Whitney Houston, at 19 years old, is leading a church choir in New Jersey in 1983 and is receiving coaching from her mother Cissy. Despite occasionally being harsh with her daughter, Cissy, a professional singer herself, encourages her to improve. Whitney finds comfort in a friendship with Robyn Crawford, which develops into a romantic relationship. Later, much to Cissy's dismay, they move into their own apartment. Whitney and Cissy are scheduled to play at Sweetwaters nightclub one evening. Cissy pretends to be ill and urges Whitney to open the performance after noticing producer Clive Davis in the crowd. After Whitney's rendition of "The Greatest Love of All" impresses Davis, Whitney is signed by Arista Records right away.

He arranges for her to perform "Home" in her first significant live appearance on The Merv Griffin Show. Whitney soon releases her hugely successful debut album and establishes Nippy Inc., her production firm, which is managed by her controlling father, John, who also happens to be her self-appointed manager. To Robyn's dismay, John urges the couple to date men when Whitney wants to recruit Robyn as her personal assistant, citing their personal relationship as the reason.

Robyn becomes enraged when she discovers that she and Jermaine Jackson are having a sexual connection after recording a love ballad. Following an argument, Whitney and Robyn break up romantically but stay close friends.

Production

I Wanna Dance with Somebody, a Whitney Houston biopic, was scheduled to be directed by Stella Meghie on April 22, 2020. Anthony McCarten was tasked with writing the screenplay and producing the movie alongside Clive Davis, Pat Houston, Larry Mestel, Denis O'Sullivan, and Jeff Kalligheri. McCarten developed the screenplay on spec, secured rights and music, and self-financed an option for Houston's life rights. The movie was acquired by TriStar Pictures on August 4, 2020. Kasi Lemmons succeeded Meghie as director on September 1, 2021; Meghie eventually functioned as executive producer.

Houston was scheduled to be portrayed by Naomi Ackie on December 15, 2020. Ashton Sanders was chosen to play Houston's husband of fifteen years, Bobby Brown, in September 2021.

Stanley Tucci was chosen to play Clive Davis in the same month.[9] Tamara Tunie and Clarke Peters were added to the cast of the movie in October 2021, while Nafessa Williams was chosen to play Robyn Crawford in place of Moses Ingram. Williams portrayed a different role in the 2015 television movie Whitney.

One source stated that main photography on the movie was scheduled to start on August 9, 2021, in Boston, Massachusetts, and Newark, New Jersey. At Boston's Marina Studios, Compelling Pictures began preproduction on the movie in August 2021. Scenes were filmed in Arlington, Massachusetts, at Gillette Stadium, Wang Theater, Cutler Majestic Theatre, and Worcester Regional Airport in October and November.

Box office

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody made $59.8 million in total revenue globally, including $23.7 million in the US and Canada and $36.1 million in other markets.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody was released alongside Babylon in the US and Canada. It was previously expected to gross between $12 and $15 million from 3,625 cinemas over the course of its four-day opening weekend. On its opening day, the movie brought in $2 million, with $750,000 coming from Thursday night previews. It then made its debut to $5.3 million in its first weekend (and a total of $7.5 million over the four days), coming in third place behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Avatar: The Way of Water.

Deadline attributed the lower-than-expected theater attendance to the possibility of a tripledemic rise in COVID-19 and flu cases, as well as the effects of Winter Storm Elliott across the country. With a mere 16 percent decline to $3.9 million in its second weekend, the movie held up admirably and came in fourth.

Avatar: The Way of Water opened first in the UK, with Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody debuting in second place. The movie made £3.3 million ($3.9 million) its first weekend of release. The next week, it continued to hold its second-place finish, earning £1.3 million for a total of £6.2 million ($7.5 million).
